How to treat Sinusitis ?

It includes the conservative measurements in the case of acute sinusitis. There are over the counter medication like OTC such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen which have the ability to relieve the symptoms of sinusitis which include the headache, pressure, fatigue and pain. The sinusitis is caused due to the viruses and resolve without the antibiotics. If the symptoms do not resolve one can go for theamoxicillin. One can also opt for the amoxicillin with clavulanate which is referred as the augmentin. It is given in those patients who have no good results with the amoxicillin.

There are new macrolide antibiotics like doxy cycline and erythromycin which are used in the patients which are allergic to the penicillin. In most of the people resolution does not occur with the use of antibiotics. They are not effective and they are similar to the placebo. It does not improve the long term clinical outcomes for this disorder. When it is used in a short term that is for 3 to 7 days it is sufficient for the patients who don’t suffer from the severe disease or any complicating factors.

In unknown acute sinusitis one can use the intra nasal cortico steroids which are not better than the placebo or are used in combination with the antibiotics. The cases which are confirmed by the radiology or nasal endoscopy they are use either alone or in combination with the antibiotics. There has been an anti microbial nasal spray which consists of xylitol. It states that the naso pharyngeal congestion, irritation and inflammation along with the respiratory tract infections like otitis media, sinusitis are treated and prevented by a nasal application of xylitol in a saline rich solution. The research also shows that the 1 to 5 percent xylitol decreases the growth of alpha hemolytic streptococci. But there were some bacteria which were not inhibited and it included the H. Inflenzae and M. Catarrhalis which may decrease the usefulness of approach.

The chronic sinusitis includes the conservative measures, medical approach, surgical treatment and other methods. In the conservative measures there is a nasal irrigation which may help to overcome this chronic condition. In the medical approach there is a role of fungus in the development of this disorder and one must go for the anti fungal drugs later on. In the surgical treatment there is a chronic or recurrent disorder which is referred to the oto laryngologist and is indicated for the assessment and treatment. It includes the nasal surgery.

In most of the cases the surgical approach is not superior to the medical treatment. It should be done in those patients who do not show sufficient relief from the optimal medicines. A recent research in the treatment of sinusitis is known as the functional endoscopic sinus surgery which is referred as the FESS. In this the normal clearance of the sinus is restored due to the removal of anatomical and pathological obstructive variations which predispose to the sinusitis. It replaces the open techniques which requires a facial or oral incision and refocuses the technique to the natural openings of sinuses rather than going for drainage with the gravity on which the Caldwell luc surgery is based.

There is another recent treatment which involves the balloon sinuplasty. It is similar to the balloon angioplasty which is used to resolve the arteries by using the balloons in an attempt to increase the openings of sinuses in a less invasive way. Its final role in the treatment of sinus disease is still doubtful but it gives us a promising results.

There are other numbers of methods which must be undertaken to treat this disorder. They can be external or internal nasal ones. The benefit of the functional endoscopic sinus surgery which is referred as the FESS has the ability to allow more targeted approach to the sinuses by decreasing the disruption of tissue and decreasing the postoperative complications.

In case of persistent symptoms the patients who do not respond much to the medical and functional endoscopic approach one can go for the older techniques like the Caldwell luc approach for maxillary sinus in which the entire affected maxillary sinus is removed and the drainage is allowed into inferior or middle meatus by creating a large window in the lateral nasal wall.
